Frequently Asked Questions @

Cheetah Safaris

Is Africa save?

Yes, your Safety is Our Priority From the moment we pick you up at Johannesburg Airport to your departure, the Cheetah team will be by your side. Our hunting areas are rural and safe, with no history of harm to any visiting hunters or families.

Your Professional Hunters will ensure your experience is secure and enjoyable. Relax, take in Africa’s beauty, and create unforgettable memories.

Are there any Activities for Wives and Non-Hunters?

While you’re out hunting, there’s plenty for wives and non-hunters to enjoy. We can arrange various side trips, including:

  • Visits to local towns
  • Relaxing African day spa experiences
  • Sun City & Pilanesberg
  • Kruger National Park
  • Elephant back-ride safaris
  • Zip-line adventures

... And more!

What will the weather be like?

From May through September, the weather is typically sunny and dry. Generally the temperatures range from the low 30s°F (0°C) in the mornings and can warm up to the 70s°F (20°C) during the day. Some days may be cooler, and occasional rain is possible, so it's a good idea to bring a water-resistant jacket.

For bow hunting we recommend late season dark moon phases, from June towards September, the drier part of the season.

How many clients in camp?

We take pride in not mixing hunting groups unless we've informed you in advance and you've confirmed that you're comfortable with more clients in camp.

What clothes should we bring on your Safari?

The most important thing for this hunt is "good footwear". We highly recommend well-broken-in boots with solid soles. Please avoid bringing shoes with "tennis-like soles" as they can be noisy and make stalking difficult. Instead, opt for "well-broken boots:  with quiet harder soles for better stealth. Camp shoes can be a nice option to change into after a day of hunting.

For “clothing", long pants or shorts are both suitable. Pants that zip into shorts can be quite handy. Warm layered clothing for mornings that can be cool, but it warms up during the day. A warm jacket, fleece, or sweater is ideal for the early hours. You’ll also want warm gloves for the chilly mornings and a light rain jacket for rare rainy days.

Camouflage clothes are great, or dark shades like olive, dark green, or dark tan. Please void any light-colored clothing. Don’t forget a hat or cap for sun protection. A belt and cartridge holder can make your hunt more convenient. Laundry is done daily, so we recommend packing four pairs of undergarments, four pairs of socks, three shirts, and three pairs of pants/shorts.

For dinner comfortable clothes like a sweatsuit, jeans, or a sweater are perfectly fine.

Gifts and Gratuities for the Staff?

The camp staff typically appreciates gifts such as old clothes, flashlights, knives, T-shirts, and similar items. As for gratuities, we recommend $300 per hunter for the camp staff and $100 per day for the professional hunters.

These amounts are just a suggestion, and the final decision on gratuities is up to each hunter.

Health and Vaccinations for Traveling to South Africa?

No immunizations are required to enter South Africa. However, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends a tetanus booster and Hepatitis A vaccines. For more information on health precautions, we suggest visiting the CDC website at [CDC South Africa Travel]

It's also wise to consult with your personal physician about traveling to Africa well in advance.

The primary hunting area for Cheetah Safaris is malaria-free. If your hunt takes you to other provinces where malaria may be present, we will inform you if malaria medication is necessary.

Is telephone and Internet services available?

Yes, it is available at a fee.

Are their Prescription Medication and Medical Care available in South Africa?

You can refill your prescription in South Africa, but it's best to bring enough medication to last for the entire trip to avoid taking time away from your hunting experience. If you're concerned about running out, ask your doctor to write a prescription for you to bring along.

South Africa boasts excellent medical facilities, and in fact, one hunter had a hip replacement here after a fall before returning to the US. These medical facilities are all within a reasonable drive from all of Cheetah Safaris hunting areas.

What recommended on Caliber and Ammunition?

For a general plains game safari, a caliber in the .30 range is recommended. We suggest bringing around 60 rounds of ammunition such as Barnes X, Swift A-Frame, or Nosler Partition bullets. A 150-180 grain bullet is ideal, depending on what your rifle shoots most accurately.

For Buffalo and Elephant we recommend .375 as the minimum caliber with solid as well as soft nose bonded bullets.

Can I Bring my Own Firearm ?

Yes, a temporary firearm import permit is required to bring your firearm into South Africa. This can be obtained at Johannesburg International Airport. You will need specific documentation for this process.

We recommend using an agent to apply for the pre-approved import permit, but if you prefer to handle it yourself, you can find the relevant information and necessary documents on the following website: www.professionalhunters.co.za

Go to "General Hunting Information" and look under "SA Firearm Importation Procedures and Suggestions". Cheetah Safaris will assist you in this proses.

Electrical Adapters and Converters

You will need both a converter and an adapter to use your electronic devices in South Africa. The converter changes the voltage from 230-240 Volts, 50Hz to 120 Volts. You can find these at most electronics stores like Radio Shack or department stores such as Wal-Mart or Target.

Cheetah Safaris does have a few converters and adapters available in camp, but it's recommended to bring your own to ensure you have one that works for your devices.

For our lady, we provide hair dryers in each chalet that are compatible with South African electrical outlets, so there’s no need to bring your own.

What essential Items to Bring on Safari?

  • Camera and plenty memory cards
  • Video camera, tapes, battery charger
  • Eyeglasses, contacts lenses, and sunglasses
  • Binoculars with strap
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • 220 to 110 voltage converter and adapter plug
  • Any medical prescriptions and allergy medications
  • Sunscreen
  • Lip balm with sunscreen
  • Hat/Cap
  • Please note: The African sun is intense, even in cooler months.

What do I need to enter South Africa?

You and your family members will need a passport that is valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date. Ensure each passport has at least 2 blank pages for visa stamps, and more if your itinerary includes stops in other countries.

In 2004, South African passport control required a blank front and back page specifically labeled for ‘’Visa'' purposes. Clients from the **US, Canada, UK, France, Germany,** and **Spain** do not require a visa to enter South Africa.
